Wix Acquires Base44 for $80M, Boosting AI-Driven Web Development
Wix, a leading cloud-based web development platform, has acquired Israeli startup Base44 in a cash deal worth $80 million. The six-month-old company, founded by 31-year-old Maor Shlomo, specialises in vibe-coding technology and has already secured a significant user base and partnerships.
Base44, launched as a side venture by Shlomo, grew rapidly to 250,000 users within just six months. The startup's unique vibe-coding platform allows users to create applications by simply entering text prompts. This innovative approach has proven profitable, with Base44 generating $189,000 in May alone.
The acquisition provides Wix with a profitable LLM vibe-coding product. Base44's partnership portfolio includes notable Israeli tech companies such as eToro and Similarweb. Shlomo chose to use Anthropic's Claude LLM through AWS for Base44 due to its cost-per-performance advantages. The deal includes a $25 million retention bonus for Base44's eight employees.
Wix's acquisition of Base44 for $80 million, along with the retention bonus, signals the growing potential and value of vibe-coding technology. Base44's impressive growth and profitability in such a short timeframe have made it an attractive target for Wix, which seeks to expand its offerings in the AI-driven web development space.
