Volkswagen Logistics Chief Outlines Decarbonization Strategies at ALSC Europe
The Volkswagen Group's logistics division, led by Oliver Bronder, has been a standout at the 2024 ALSC Europe Conference, discussing its transformation and commitment to sustainability. Bronder, the head of vehicle logistics, delivered a keynote speech, highlighting the division's strategies to decarbonize and improve reliability.
Bronder spoke about VW Group Logistics' three-pronged approach to decarbonization. Firstly, they aim to boost train capacity, powered by green electricity. Secondly, the division is adopting electric trucks to reduce emissions. Lastly, they are exploring the use of LNG ships for cleaner maritime transport.
During recent capacity crunches, VW Group Logistics temporarily increased its use of chartered trucks. However, the division has since returned to its normal contract usage. Meanwhile, they have stepped up their digitalization efforts to enhance efficiency in finished vehicle shipments.
Bronder also expressed optimism about the long-term use of synthetic fuels like ammonia to power vessels. The division has strengthened its problem-solving capabilities and cross-functional collaboration, driven by recent supply chain crises. This has led to improved demand and capacity forecasting, with a focus on transparency and data.
VW Group Logistics sees logistics as a strategic advantage, with the goal of enhancing reliability for the end customer. By embracing sustainability, digitalization, and improved forecasting, the division is well-positioned to navigate future challenges and disruptions in the automotive industry.
