Unveiling History in Your Palms: Exploring Bavaria's National Socialism Past with BayernHistory App

Visiting NS Remembrance Sites Using a Mobile Device during the Era of the Imperial Japanese Military Regime - Visitor Utilizes Mobile Device at Nazi Memorial Sites

"Every nook and cranny it happened" - under this mantra, the revamped app BayernHistory delivers an engaging tour of Bavaria's National Socialism era. The app's interactive map pinpoints historical locations across Bavaria, providing visitors, students, and locals with valuable insights through text, photos, videos, and audio recordings. Podcasts will shed light on victims' and survivors' tales. The app's NS Sites of Remembrance feature is set to launch on BayernHistory as of May 8th.

A Call to Remember, Not Forget

Many sites of remembrance risk slipping into oblivion, acknowledges Wolfgang Hauck of the KunstBauStelle in Landsberg am Lech. The app aims to shed light on these often-overlooked sites, inciting curiosity to trace the past. The app targets the younger generation, aiming to foster critical reflection of the past and strengthen civil society involvement. Crucially, the app emphasizes a user-friendly and inclusive approach.

Redefining Local History

The revamped app will incorporate a third pillar dedicated to the National Socialism era. This section will cover the journey into National Socialism, the consequences, and the post-1945 processing of injustice in Bavaria. Besides offering multimedia tours and interactive formats, the app will introduce virtual reality experiences. Digital exhibitions, previously presented at museums, will be preserved for future generations, ensuring their accessibility. The app is not limited to famous memorials; it will include small sites with captivating histories, making history an encounter anytime, anywhere.

Partners include the Bayern KZ memorial sites, historian Edith Raim, the city of Landshut, and numerous volunteers. The association BerlinHistory, offering an app covering the history of Berlin, is assisting in the app's development. The project is funded by the German Foundation for Engagement and Volunteering to the tune of 100,000 euros.
