Vessel "Pevek" is now docked on exposed dock in Kaliningrad
The multifunctional ice-class rescue vessel "Pevek" is currently under construction at the Baltic Shipyard Yantar in Kaliningrad. This vessel is being built for the Russian Marine Rescue Service under Rosmorrechflot (the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport).
The "Pevek" is designed to operate in harsh Arctic conditions, including the icy waters of the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Its primary purpose is to enhance emergency preparedness in the region, making it a crucial asset for Russia's capabilities in emergency response, icebreaking, and maritime rescue operations in the Arctic.
The vessel is equipped as an ice-class ship, capable of navigating and performing rescue missions in difficult ice conditions along the NSR. Its functions include search and rescue operations, prevention and elimination of maritime emergencies (such as oil spills or shipwrecks), and environmental protection.
Construction of the "Pevek" began in April 2022 at the Baltic Shipyard Yantar. Work on the formation of the superstructure, loading, and installation of main equipment for the ship will continue at the shipyard. The vessel is expected to be completed and delivered around 2024.
In addition to the "Pevek", the Baltic Shipyard Yantar is also building a second multifunctional ice-class rescue vessel. These vessels play a critical role in improving safety and operational reliability for shipping and exploration activities moving through the strategically important and increasingly navigable NSR, which is gaining importance for international shipping and Arctic resource development.
In summary, the "Pevek" is a key asset under Rosmorrechflot aimed at strengthening emergency response and environmental safety on the Northern Sea Route. Its construction is a significant step towards improving emergency preparedness in the Arctic, ensuring the safety of shipping and exploration activities in the region.
The construction of these multifunctional ice-class rescue vessels at the Baltic Shipyard Yantar signifies a significant investment in the Russian Marine Rescue Service's capabilities, blending science and technology for improved environmental-science measures along the Northern Sea Route (NSR). As these vessels come equipped with advanced technology for navigating harsh conditions, finance and energy conservation are crucial factors for their efficient operation within the global context of resource-intensive industry. Anchored in the expanding shipping and exploration activities along the strategically significant NSR, these vessels contribute towards a safer and greener Arctic economy.
