Valve Drops Support for 32-bit Windows on Steam in 2026

Valve, the company behind the popular gaming platform Steam, has announced a significant change in its support for Windows operating systems. Starting January 1, 2026, the Steam client will no longer receive security updates or support requests for 32-bit versions of Windows, aligning with Microsoft's plans to end official support for Windows 10 next month.

The shift is driven by the obsolescence of 32-bit operating systems, as every modern computer now uses 64-bit systems with compatibility layers for older 32-bit applications. Valve has stated that 32-bit Windows is no longer compatible with the drivers and libraries required for Steam's core features.

Initially built with 32-bit systems in mind, Steam has been available on Windows for over two decades. However, with the majority of users now on 64-bit systems, Valve is focusing its support efforts on these platforms. After the deadline, Steam will continue to work on 32-bit Windows but without updates or support.

Valve advises gamers to upgrade to 64-bit Windows, specifically Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11, to ensure they continue receiving timely updates and assistance. With Windows 11 being exclusively 64-bit and holding over 60% of the OS share, according to Steam's August 2025 Hardware Survey, this move is expected to impact a significant portion of Steam users.
