Upgraded specifications for PS6 and PlayStation handheld revealed, marking a significant leap over PS5 performance levels
The gaming world is abuzz with rumors about the upcoming PlayStation 6 (PS6) and its handheld counterpart, codenamed Canis. According to a leaked AMD presentation from 2023, both consoles are expected to be powered by AMD APUs and are rumored to launch simultaneously to complement each other.
The PS6 is tipped for a release in late 2027 or early 2028 and is expected to offer triple the rasterization performance over the PS5 and double that of the PS5 Pro. This impressive leap is attributed to AMD's newer RDNA 5 architecture and faster GDDR7 memory, which provides higher bandwidth and efficiency. The PS6's ray tracing performance is also expected to see a boost, making it notably better than the PS5 Pro, aided by hardware upgrades and updated upscaling algorithms such as an advanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) expected next year.
In terms of specifics, the PS6 is reportedly aiming for a 160W TBP and will have 8 Zen 6 cores and between 40 and 48 RDNA 5 compute units. The handheld device, on the other hand, is said to use a lower power AMD APU with 4 Zen 6C cores and between 12 and 20 RDNA 5 compute units, paired with LPDDR5X memory and targeting around 15W TBP.
While the PlayStation handheld, or Canis, is less powerful than the PS6, it is expected to surpass the performance of the Xbox ROG Ally handheld but is not intended as a powerhouse device. Exact ray tracing performance details for the handheld are not specified, but presumably it will be significantly less powerful than the PS6 console while still benefiting from RDNA 5 improvements.
Sony is believed to bring PS5 and PS4 backwards compatibility to its console, and PlayStation Plus may continue to bring games from further back. The PS6 is expected to cost $499, similar to the launch price of the PS5.
It's important to note that these specs are based on a 2023 leaked AMD presentation, so final specs may change before the likely 2027-2028 release. The exact specs and features of the PS6 and PlayStation handheld are not yet confirmed, and Sony has not officially announced the consoles.
