Upcoming visual overhauls for watchOS 12 and tvOS 19, aligning with the 'Solarium' aesthetic refresh slated for iOS 19 and macOS 16.
Apple to Introduce Major Software Updates Across Operating Systems at WWDC 2025
On Monday, June 9, Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is set to begin, and according to a report from Bloomberg, significant software updates for watchOS, tvOS, iOS, and macOS are to be unveiled.
Mark Gurman, writing for Bloomberg, revealed that Apple will introduce a major interface refresh for upcoming versions of all four operating systems, inspired by the visionOS software on the Apple Vision Pro. While details are still scarce, Gurman suggests that this refresh, known internally as 'Solarium,' will aim for a slicker and more modern aesthetic.
iOS 19 and macOS 16 are expected to receive design overhauls, as previously reported by Gurman in March. Now, it appears that the Apple Watch and Apple TV will also be receiving similar updates. The new design is rumored to feature a more liberal use of transparency and glass-like effects, aligning with the style introduced by visionOS.
TVOS 19 is expected to receive a UI modernization, similar to watchOS. New icons, glassy and transparent elements, and a refreshed look are anticipated for the upcoming update. Streamlined menu structures and interactionswill also be introduced for improved cohesion with the rest of the Apple ecosystem.
The changes to watchOS 12 will involve more than just design updates. Navigation hierarchies are expected to be updated, along with new icons, to improve usability and visual consistency.
The company typically follows a 12-month schedule, with a grand unveiling at WWDC, followed by several months of beta testing before the official release. Expect to see the new software updates in September for iOS and watchOS.
Gurman says that while iOS 7 in 2013 was the biggest-ever visual change to the iPhone's software, the latest overhaul will be more widely felt. As WWDC 2025 approaches, stay tuned for updates on the latest software announcements.
