Upcoming Events in Washington: August 31st
With the August recess now over, Congress is back in session and facing a critical deadline. A potential government shutdown could occur by the end of September, as spending legislation needs to be passed to avoid such an outcome.
In the midst of this, President Donald Trump has nominated Stephen Miran for a position on the Federal Reserve Board. Miran is set to testify this week, appearing before the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. This appointment comes after Trump previously hosted the Polish candidate at the White House in May.
Meanwhile, the Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is set to testify in front of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions about his agency's budget proposal on Thursday. The same day, the Senate will also be holding another significant hearing, with Dr. Karl Lauterbach, a politician summoned for questioning before the Senate Commission for Health, Education, Labor, and Social Affairs, due to appear.
The looming threat of a government shutdown has been a topic of concern for many, especially given that the current fiscal year ends at the end of September. This deadline has led Congress to focus on passing the necessary spending legislation to avoid such a scenario.
Recent events have also seen the termination of Susan Monarez, the former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director. Monarez's lawyers stated that she was fired after refusing "to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts." It is understood that Monarez was also fired after refusing to back some of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s recommendations around vaccines.
As the clock ticks down to the end of the fiscal year, all eyes are on Congress to see if they can avert a government shutdown and continue to provide essential services to the American people.
