Unmanned aerial vehicles hovering persistently above the Federal Law Enforcement vessel for extended periods.
In the North Sea, a federal police vessel, the "BP 81 Potsdam," has been monitoring a Russian freighter, the "Lauga," en route to Belgium. A curious turn of events unfolded during the operation as the officers reportedly detected seven unidentified drones following their ship and the freighter for nearly three hours.
According to a confidential situation report by Spiegel, the incident occurred around midnight on May 17. The drones displayed green and red position lights but could not be identified, and due to nighttime conditions and limited equipment, no photographs were taken. The origin of the drones could not be definitively traced, although they were suspected of originating from the Russian freighter.
Upon the freighter's arrival in Belgium, the Belgian authorities were requested to perform an inspection. No evidence of drones was found during this inspection.
The North Sea has seen a pattern of incidents involving Russian activities, such as a recent oil tanker accident involving a Russian captain. Additionally, there have been frequent reports of drones spotted over military installations in Germany since February. Remarkably, the wingspan of these unmanned objects has been up to five meters.
Global trends suggest an increasing use of drones for military purposes, with Russia employing them for surveillance and defense. For instance, Russia has reportedly intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones, demonstrating the strategic use of drones in ongoing conflicts.
The intersection of advanced technology with geopolitical tensions raises concerns about potential surveillance activities in strategic waters. As the law enforcement agencies grapple with seemingly daily drone sightings over naval bases, harbors, and chemical parks, the need for effective countersurveillance measures becomes more pressing.
