United States and UAE reach consensus on Abu Dhabi's acquisition of cutting-edge AI chips, as per Trump's statement

DUBAI: In a significant move, President Donald Trump and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to create a pathway for the Gulf nation to procure state-of-the-art AI semiconductors from American firms, thereby enhancing Abu Dhabi's ambitions to emerge as a leading AI hub.

The visit concluded Trump's Gulf tour that included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. During his stay in Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital, he announced further energy investments worth $440 billion over the next decade.

Trump highlighted the robust economic relationship between the UAE and the US, stating, "We work together, and the money that's made here comes back to us." He added that the UAE had been sought after by others but asserted, "There's no more wooing, I think we're in pretty good shape."

Another notable development was the $14.5 billion commitment from Etihad Airways to invest in 28 American-made Boeing aircraft.

The landmark AI deal, sealed on Thursday, is significant for the UAE, which has been navigating its relationship with key partners like the US and China. This agreement reflects the confidence of the Trump administration in managing these technologies securely, mainly by ensuring that data centers are managed by US companies.

At a press conference in Abu Dhabi, Trump confirmed, "Yesterday the two countries also agreed to create a path for UAE to buy some of the world's most advanced AI semiconductors from American companies, a very big contract." He emphasized that "this will generate billions and billions of dollars in business and accelerate the UAE's plans to become a really major player in artificial intelligence."

The UAE's strategic venture isn't limited to this AI deal. The Gulf nation has embarked on an ambitious project to construct a massive AI campus in Abu Dhabi, in partnership with American firms.

The 10-square-mile AI campus, expected to be the largest outside the US, will provide up to 5 gigawatts of capacity for AI data centers once fully operational. This mega-campus will be driven by a mix of nuclear, solar, and gas power to minimize carbon emissions, aligning with the UAE's goals for sustainable development.

The campus will further include a science park dedicated to driving advancements in AI innovation. The project is designed to serve as a regional platform for US hyperscalers, offering low-latency services to nearly half of the global population within a 3,200 km radius of the UAE.

The initiative is part of a broader US-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership. Under this framework, US companies will operate the data centers and provide managed cloud services across the region, ensuring security and oversight of sensitive technologies. The agreement includes strong security guarantees to protect American technology and intellectual property.

The strategic importance of this partnership is highlighted by high-profile visits and discussions involving major US tech leaders, including executives from Nvidia, OpenAI, SoftBank, and Cisco. The first phase of the project will see the construction of a 1 GW AI data center, serving as a critical hub for AI research and development in the Middle East.

This partnership signifies the UAE's commitment to becoming a global AI hub and its deepening cooperation with the US in advanced technology and semiconductor infrastructure.
