Ukrainian Hacker 'Tymoshchuk' Arrested for $100M in Ransomware Attacks

Ukrainian national Volodymyr Viktorovich Tymoshchuk, known for his role in various malware attacks, faces multiple charges including conspiracy to commit fraud and computer fraud. Tymoshchuk, who operated under multiple aliases, is accused of causing millions in damages across the U.S. and Europe.

Tymoshchuk, also known as 'deadforz', 'Boba', 'msfv', and 'farnetwork', allegedly created and administered several malware strains, including LockerGoga, MegaCortex, and Nefilim. These malicious software programs caused significant harm, with LockerGoga alone implicated in attacks on French engineering firm Altran and manufacturing companies Hexion and Momentive, resulting in an estimated $104 million in damages.

Tymoshchuk's operations spanned from December 2018 to October 2021, targeting hundreds of organizations. He was known for creating new malware strains when decryptors were released for his past creations. One of his most notable attacks was on Norwegian aluminum giant Norsk Hydro in 2019.

Tymoshchuk is not the only individual linked to these malware groups. Co-defendant Artem Stryzhak, extradited from Spain, faces charges related to Nefilim operations. Other hackers connected to LockerGoga, MegaCortex, and Nefilim remain wanted by authorities. Additionally, Liridon Masurica, a Kosovo national, pleaded guilty to running a criminal marketplace selling compromised accounts and personal information.

Tymoshchuk's alleged actions have caused significant financial damage and disruption across multiple industries. With an $11 million reward offered for information leading to his arrest, international efforts are underway to apprehend him and bring him to justice. The widespread impact of his activities underscores the need for continued vigilance and cooperation in combating cybercrime.
