Ukrainian Buriat turret effectively incorporated onto Estonian unmanned THMIS ground vehicle
Ukrainian Buria Remote Weapon Turret Successfully Integrated with THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicle Platform
The Ukrainian Buria remote weapon turret has been successfully integrated with the Estonian Milrem Robotics' THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle platform, marking a significant step forward for robotic combat systems in Ukraine.
The integration was officially announced in August 2025 after comprehensive live-fire testing under operational conditions in Ukraine. The tests confirmed the stable, accurate, and effective performance of the system.
The Buria turret is a remotely operated weapon station equipped with a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher (Mk 19), capable of engaging targets at up to approximately 1,100 meters (over 1 km) away. It weighs 47 kg (104 lbs) and features an automated fire control and guidance system enabling rapid and precise target engagement.
During the trials, the THeMIS combat ground platform demonstrated excellent manoeuvrability, stability, and off-road capability. This makes it a suitable fire support vehicle that keeps human operators out of harm’s way.
The cooperation between Ukrainian defence tech company Frontline (developer of Buria) and Estonian Milrem Robotics (developer of THeMIS) has produced an enhanced unmanned combat system to improve tactical effectiveness on the modern battlefield.
Frontline has also signed a strategic agreement with German-Ukrainian drone manufacturer Quantum Systems in July. The next stage will be integrating the system into active mission-planning scenarios.
Verification of the system's stability in various operational scenarios is planned to take place in the coming weeks. Adapting solutions for specific battlefield tasks for further scaling is also planned for the system.
The Buria grenade-launcher turret has been in service with military units since January 2025 and is already in serial production. The successful firing also confirmed the versatility of the THeMIS platform when working with different types of weapons.
THeMIS became the first unmanned ground platform of its class to be used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in combat missions. The success of the integration was confirmed during live-fire tests conducted in Ukraine.
The strategic agreement between Frontline and Quantum Systems followed a Memorandum of Strategic Partnership signed in April 2025. This collaboration highlights international collaboration in the field of defence technology.
In summary, the Buria grenade-launcher turret on the THeMIS platform is now an operational, serially produced system in Ukrainian service and represents a key advancement in unmanned combat support, with ongoing plans to deploy and utilize this system for battlefield operational advantage.
Technology has played a significant role in enhancing the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as seen with the successful integration of the Buria remote weapon turret with the THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle platform. This advancement in unmanned combat support is a testament to the ongoing collaboration in defense technology.
