"U.S. launch of Switch 2 might see prices surge further, analysts caution due to tariff uncertainties – a debacle of confusion and farce"
New and Improved Switch 2 Almost Here, But Will it Break the Bank?
Hey folks! The long-awaited Switch 2 is almost upon us, with pre-orders flying left and right across the globe, despite calls for a price drop. But hold onto your wallets - some experts are predicting further price spikes for the console in the US.
You may recall Nintendo announcing a delay in US pre-orders a few months back, to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Although we didn't see an immediate price hike, certain accessories did climb in cost.
So, what does the future hold? We reached out to a few games industry analysts to gather their insights on the situation. And, guess what? Many believe the console won't stay within its current price range forever.
"If tariff talks don't progress swiftly, and Nintendo runs out of hardware, price increases could be on the horizon," says Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games. In agreement, Circana's executive director and analyst, Mat Piscatella, says, "Tariffs impacting countries like China, where the Switch 2 is produced, could lead to increased prices for the console down the line."
However, David Cole, CEO of DFC Intelligence, is a little more optimistic. He believes Nintendo's already-announced price will protect the console from potential increases. But Nathaniel Krasnoi, a market analyst, isn't so certain. He notes that while Nintendo is known for prioritizing affordability, global tariffs and inflationary pressures may force their hand.
So, what does this all mean? Well, it seems there's a chance that the Switch 2's price tag might climb higher than its current $449.99 due to tariffs and market conditions. Nintendo itself has acknowledged that future price adjustments are possible. Keep an eye on those market conditions!
