Twitter experienced and resolved a significant service disruption today, impacting numerous users, including you.

On May 30, 2025, users of social media platform X (formerly Twitter) were met with a series of unexpected issues. The platform experienced a global outage, causing empty feeds, inability to post, and error messages like "Something went wrong. Try reloading."

During the outage, users reported seeing "Nothing to see here - yet... Check back later to see posts about this" messages when trying to refresh their timeline. Tapping on any area of the site would result in an error message if you tried to load new posts. Some users also experienced 503 errors for endpoints such as Get User Timeline, Get Tweets, Get DM, and Create Tweet.

The outage appears to be specifically affecting the loading of new posts, while user profiles, topics, and pages remained accessible. Additionally, some X API endpoints were experiencing degraded performance.

Thousands of users were affected by the outage, with reports of over 25,000 outages on Downdetector quickly climbing. The cause of the outage was a major technical glitch related to data center issues, specifically involving hardware problems such as a battery fire at a leased facility in Oregon.

Remedies and user actions during the outage included reloading the page, logging out and back into the account, and clearing browser cache and cookies. However, these measures were mostly temporary workarounds, and the outage lasted several hours as technical teams addressed the data center faults.

The outage was first reported on Downdetector around 3:40 p.m ET, and service was restored globally for all users by 5 p.m ET. However, as of the update at 6:40 p.m. ET, X has not acknowledged the outage. Some users are flocking to other platforms, like Threads or Reddit, to track the outage.

The May 30 outage was part of a pattern of recurring service disruptions throughout 2025 linked to infrastructure instability and cost-cutting in engineering teams under Elon Musk’s ownership since 2022. Similar outages had occurred in July and August 2025, with thousands of users impacted globally, suggesting ongoing challenges with platform reliability and server capacity. Users and industry analysts have called for infrastructure upgrades to prevent frequent outages that impact global communications and business operations.

  1. Although users were unable to post or access new content on social media platform X due to the outage, many turned to social-media alternatives like Reddit for discussions about the issue.
  2. The recurring service disruptions on social media platform X throughout 2025, including the May 30 outage, have sparked concerns about the platform's technology infrastructure and its ability to handle high volumes of traffic, especially in light of cost-cutting measures taken under Elon Musk's ownership.
