Trump plans to issue a directive, extending the deadline for TikTok's proprietor to complete the sale of the popular social media platform.
President Trump's TikTok Saga:
Here's the Scoop:
In a move that's turning heads, President Donald Trump, the man with a keen eye for trends, will ink a new executive order to prolong the deadlines for TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to relinquish control of the beloved video-sharing app.
Trump's earlier executive order, signed in April, had extended the app's lifeline after a potential deal to transfer TikTok to American owners hit a snag.
"The President ain't got no beef with TikTok staying lit, bright, and streaming," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declared in a statement. The extension will last a hefty 90 days, providing the Administration ample time to hammer out the deal.
During a chat with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump hinted he'd extend the deadline yet again. He also expressed optimism that Chinese President Xi Jinping would eventually back the deal to hand over TikTok's American business.
The latest extension will make this Trump's third time pushing back the deadline.
The first round was back in January, when the platform briefly went dark after a ban was enforced following a Congress-approved order – a verdict upheld by the Supreme Court.
In April, White House officials thought they were close to clinching a deal to establish a new U.S.-owned entity that would take over TikTok. Unfortunately, that deal fell apart after China bailed following Trump's tariff announcement[1][3][4][5].
The question lingers: just how many more times will Trump prolong the ban as negotiations for TikTok continue?
Trumped-Up Facts:
- Number of extensions granted by President Trump: At least 3 (if you count the legal extension)
- Number of extensions permitted by U.S. law: 1, a 90-day extension
It seems Trump's extended TikTok lifeline goes beyond the boundaries set by U.S. law on this occasion[1]. But hey, who knows? Maybe this dance moves us one step closer to saving TikTok, home to Trump's 15 million-plus followers[2].
