Amazon's move to shut down its Quebec operations, affecting around 1,700 permanent employees and 250 temporary positions, has left the union at the Laval facility concerned. The warehouse, which is the only unionized Amazon facility in Canada, has been at the center of growing safety and compensation concerns among workers. In fact, data from CorpWatch revealed a disabling injury rate of 19.42 per 100 workers per year at a Canadian facility, sharply contrasting the industry average of 2.9.
In response to these issues, workers at the Laval facility unionized with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) in 2022. They were expecting Amazon to negotiate their first contract this month, with demands for a starting wage of $26 per hour and enhanced workplace protections. However, the closure announcement comes as a major blow.
Amazon has cited cost-cutting as the primary reason for the closure, claiming they will save customers money by returning to a third-party delivery model supported by local small businesses. But the timing and the union's allegations of union-busting activities paint a different picture. The union, which considers the closure a direct response to the unionization effort, strongly disagrees with Amazon's stance.
The upcoming closure, scheduled over the next two months, has left the union questioning Amazon's intentions and their commitment to uphold labor laws. The president of the CSN, Caroline Senneville, asserts that Amazon's consistent efforts to hinder unionization and reject labor code provisions since the unionization campaign began three years ago, strengthens this suspicion.
