The Withings Smart Scale Features an 'Eye-Closed Mode,' Concealing Your Weighing Data.

Modern advanced weighing scales aren't just about calculating your weight; they measure a plethora of health-related statistics, serving as a good incentive to use them regularly. However, there are mornings when you wish to shun the reality of your weight. In such instances, Withings' latest Body Smart scale comes handy. Although it records your health data, it conceals these figures from its display screen.

Prior to smartwatches transforming into wearable health trackers, Withings' smart scales were already measuring more than just your weight, encompassing muscle mass, BMI, and even heart rate. This data is wirelessly transferred to a smartphone application, making it simple to monitor changes in your health longitudinally.

Withings has progressively expanded the range of health metrics collected by its smart scales. Over a year ago, they announced the Body Scan scale that features an extendable handle with four extra electrodes, enabling it to record six-lead ECGs, besides providing body fat, muscle mass, and bone mass measurements for your torso and individual limbs. Regrettably, the Withings Body Scan scale is yet to hit the market (the company anticipates its US release later this year). On the other hand, today, the company has introduced a new addition to its smart scale lineup – one with fewer features and a price point that just manages to slip under $100.

The new Withings Body Smart scale isn't equipped for ECGs or provides leg muscle evaluation, but it still offers a wide array of health metrics, including weight, accurate to within 50 grams, which can even be recorded discreetly. A novel feature called 'Eyes Closed Mode' secrets your weight from the scale's screen, showcasing instead uplifting messages of motivation or other details such as the day's air quality or weather forecast.

Similar to its previous incarnations, the Body Smart utilizes multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis, which involves measuring the resistance and reactance of tissue to a tiny, imperceptible electrical signal that traverses your body, from one foot to the other. This enables the Body Smart scale to also quantify fat mass, muscle mass, water weight proportion, as well as visceral fat, which Withings describes as "the type of fat that encircles the internal organs, linked to an elevated risk of heart disease and diabetes." The objective is to help users gain a more profound understanding of their physical composition, thereby enabling them to make wiser decisions about diet and exercise in the future.

In May, a software upgrade will be rolled out for Withings' smart scales, enabling the Body Smart scale to ascertain a user's Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which represents the number of calories your body burns at rest while maintaining its basic vital functions. This data can be employed to form more informed decisions with regard to caloric intake.

The Withings Body Smart is now available at $99.95, starting today, in a pristine white or black finish, featuring a full-color LCD screen.
