Tesla's New Model Y Variant Arrives, Starting at $35,000
Tesla is set to introduce a more affordable version of its Model Y SUV. The new variant, internally codenamed the E41, will undercut the current Model Y's price by around $10,000 in the US, with a speculated base price of about $35,000 before taxes. However, German pricing is yet to be announced.
The new Model Y variant will feature several external changes. It sports a redesigned rear light cluster, an extended tailgate, and new aerodynamic wheels. Leaked photos, with the car camouflaged, reveal these modifications. Internally, the E41 is a simplified version of the Model Y Standard Range, with numerous equipment cuts.
Notable omissions include the glass roof, electrically folding mirrors, tire pressure monitoring systems, and reduced interior comforts like single-axis electric seat adjustment and a basic audio system. The front light strip and fog lights are absent, replaced by a horizontal black line at the rear instead of the usual red light strip.
The stripped-down Model Y, externally, has simplified suspension components and optical adjustments. Tesla's decision to launch a reduced version of the Model Y instead of a new, lower-priced electric car is aimed at making electric vehicles more accessible to a wider range of customers.
