Tesla Settles Jeremy Banner Autopilot Crash Case Out of Court
The Jeremy Banner case, a 2019 fatal crash in Florida involving a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot, has reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement. However, Tesla Inc. has not been publicly named as the settling party. Details remain scarce as of early 2025.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded that Jeremy Banner's crash was due to 'inattention due to over-reliance on automation'. The NTSB criticised Tesla's technology for not adequately monitoring and enforcing driver engagement. The lawsuit stemmed from Banner's Model 3 colliding with a tractor-trailer, allegedly due to an Autopilot system failure.
The settlement was finalised just as Tesla was about to face trial over another 2019 fatal crash in Florida, also involving its driver-assistance system. This is not the first time Tesla has settled a case related to fatal crashes linked to its driver-assistance systems before it went to trial. The company has a history of such settlements.
While the specific details of the Jeremy Banner case settlement remain private, it is clear that Tesla has once again reached an agreement in a lawsuit involving its Autopilot system. The company continues to face scrutiny over its driver-assistance technology and the role it plays in such incidents.
