Tesla Announces Price Increases and Free Supercharging for Model S and Model X

Tesla has made several announcements regarding its premium electric vehicles, the Model S and Model X. The changes include price increases, the reintroduction of free Supercharging, and the discontinuation of certain models in certain markets.

In a move that affects both new and existing owners, Tesla has reintroduced free Supercharging for newly ordered Model S and Model X vehicles worldwide. However, the company has not specified whether this offer applies to previously owned vehicles or only to newly ordered ones.

The price increases for these vehicles are primarily due to updates and improvements, including new features like a front bumper camera, refined interior, and better aerodynamics, which enhance efficiency and user experience. The price increases reflect these enhancements and offset factors like rising production costs and changes in incentives.

In Germany, the top Plaid version of the Model S with three motors now costs 119,900 euros, an increase of approximately 11% from the previous price. The normal all-wheel-drive version of the Model X has increased in price by around 15% to 114,900 euros. As a Plaid, the Model X now costs 124,990 euros, also an increase of approximately 11%.

In North America, Tesla raised prices overnight, affecting the Model X, which has increased by 5,000 dollars in the US and an equivalent amount in Canadian dollars. In Canada, the new prices introduced around mid-2025 are as follows:

  • Model S AWD: CAD 139,990 (up CAD 6,000)
  • Model S Plaid: CAD 159,990 (up CAD 5,000)
  • Model X AWD: CAD 149,990 (up CAD 9,000)
  • Model X Plaid: CAD 169,990 (up CAD 8,000)

In Europe, Tesla has apparently stopped selling the Model S and Model X new vehicles, focusing more on other segments and autonomous technologies. As a result, price changes there are less relevant, as sale availability is limited or ending.

Tesla has not provided individual sales figures for the Model S and Model X. However, it was reported that approximately 85,000 units of Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck were sold together in 2024.

It's worth noting that the Model S and Model X are no longer produced as right-hand drive versions and therefore not sold in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Thailand. Additionally, the Model X is no longer offered in some European countries.

Tesla charges a 980 euro "destination and registration fee" for both the Model S and Model X, which remains unchanged. The company has also stopped producing the Model S and Model X as right-hand drive versions, which affects markets like Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Thailand.

The rule of unlimited and free Supercharger charging for Model S and Model X vehicles was initially applied to all Tesla electric cars, but was abolished in 2016 with some intermittent comebacks. This offer was reintroduced alongside the price increases for these vehicles.

External factors such as the expiry of federal EV tax credits (e.g., in the U.S.) effectively increase the net cost of Tesla vehicles by around $7,500, impacting perceived prices.
