Tech titan Meta has unveiled their latest innovation: smart glasses sporting a built-in display. Aiming high, they're targeting the ultimate intellectual upgrade, dubbed 'superintelligence'.
In a significant move, Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook, has launched its first consumer-ready smart glasses with a built-in display. The Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses were unveiled at the company's annual Connect conference for developers by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The smart glasses are part of Meta's Ray-Ban line and feature a small digital display in the right lens for basic tasks such as notifications. They are intended to expand towards the concept of 'superintelligence' promised by artificial intelligence.
During the demonstration, Zuckerberg showcased the capabilities of the Meta Ray-Ban Display, but the glasses experienced a call failure during some demos, as acknowledged by the CEO. He candidly admitted, 'I don't know what to tell you guys, I keep on messing this up.'
Despite the minor hiccup, the audience applauded Zuckerberg's acknowledgement of the call failure. The Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses are considered one of the early consumer hits of the artificial intelligence era.
Meta is not the only key manufacturer active in developing consumer-ready smart glasses with integrated displays. Vuzix Corporation, known for its AI-powered smart glasses and AR waveguide technology, and Innovative Eyewear, which develops smart eyewear under brands like Lucyd, Nautica, Eddie Bauer, and Reebok, are also players in this emerging market.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses will be available starting at US$799 on September 30 in stores. Zuckerberg described glasses as the ideal form factor for personal superintelligence, enabling users to stay present while accessing AI capabilities. The launch of the Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses is Meta's latest attempt to catch up in the high-stakes AI race.
