Synergy Starts Construction on Australia's Largest Grid-Scale Battery
Synergy has started construction on the country's largest grid-scale battery, the 164 MW/900 MWh Muchea Battery project in Western Australia. This six-hour battery is set to enhance grid stability in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) once operational.
The project, located near the existing Collie Power Station, was initially announced by Synergy in late 2022. It aims to be one of the world's largest batteries, with a capacity of 500 MW/2000 MWh. Upon completion, the Collie BESS will utilize modularized batteries designed to last for 20 years. While the project's status remains uncertain as of December 2023, it is expected to start operations by the end of 2025. Synergy plans to build a total of 3GWh of energy storage systems in Australia by 2025, with the Collie BESS being a significant part of this goal.
The Collie BESS project, once operational, will play a crucial role in Western Australia's transition to renewable energy. Its large capacity and long lifespan will provide reliable energy storage, supporting grid stability and the integration of renewable energy sources.
