Coromandel International Strengthens Phosphate Value Chain and Embraces Technology-Driven Agriculture

Coromandel International Limited, a leading Indian agribusiness company, is making significant strides in its strategic initiatives. The company is focusing on strengthening its technology-driven agriculture solutions and integrating the phosphate value chain.

The company's phosphoric and sulphuric acid plants at Kakinada are progressing well and are expected to be commissioned by Q4 of FY25-26. Additionally, Coromandel has approved the acquisition of an additional 17.69% issued share capital of Baobab Mining and Chemicals Corporation (BMCC) in Senegal for a consideration of $7.70 million. This acquisition will take Coromandel's overall shareholding in BMCC to 71.51%, a strategic move to further strengthen its backward integration in the phosphates value chain.

Securing vital rock phosphate supplies for its phosphoric acid plants in India, Coromandel is aiming to enhance raw material security with this acquisition. Related projects at Kakinada are progressing towards commissioning by Q4 FY25-26. The company has also signed a long-term agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Maaden to secure DAP fertilizer shipments, further reinforcing its commitment to securing vital raw material sources and ensuring long-term supply chain resilience.

On the technology front, Coromandel is extending its drone spraying operations covering 2.2 lakh acres across seven states under its Gromor Drive initiative. This initiative integrates digital and farm advisory services to improve crop productivity. The company is investing in AgTech startups to advance innovative agricultural solutions and has adopted a crop-focused approach in its retail business. By the year-end, Coromandel aims to have an expanding network of stores targeting 1200.

In a bid to promote sustainability, Coromandel has set up a joint venture with Sakarni Plaster to manufacture and market Phospho Gypsum based green building materials. This venture utilises industrial by-products, showcasing a commitment to sustainable by-product utilization. Coromandel also continues to innovate in crop protection, launching new products and enhancing its portfolio with advanced formulations to strengthen its integrated crop management capabilities.

In summary, Coromandel International is pursuing a multi-pronged strategy centered on securing and integrating phosphate raw materials, advancing technology adoption in agriculture (including drone tech and digital farm advisory), expanding retail reach with customized solutions, and promoting sustainable by-product utilization.
