Space Norway & SSTL to Launch Radar Satellite for North Atlantic Monitoring in 2027
Space Norway and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) are joining forces to launch a radar satellite in early 2027, designed for maritime domain awareness. The initial customer is the Norwegian Army, with capacity available for other global customers. The satellite, the first of a planned constellation of six, will focus on monitoring the North Atlantic region.
The 400-kilogram satellite will be equipped with a C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR), optimized for ocean data collection. It will primarily monitor energy infrastructure, fisheries, and underwater cables in the North Atlantic region. The satellite can collect high-resolution SAR data over a wide swath to track ships, correlating it with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) sensor.
The satellite is scheduled to launch on a SpaceX rideshare mission. If demand increases, additional satellites could be added to the constellation to meet the needs of more customers. The satellite is being built by SSTL, while Space Norway will provide the payload and operate the satellite. The constellation aims to provide North Atlantic monitoring every few hours.
The radar satellite, a collaboration between Space Norway and SSTL, is set to revolutionize maritime domain awareness in the North Atlantic region. With the Norwegian Army as the first customer, the satellite's capabilities could benefit other global customers in the future. The planned constellation of six satellites aims to provide regular, high-resolution monitoring of the region.
