Sofia Offshore Wind Farm Reaches Halfway Point with 51 Turbines Installed

RWE's Sofia Vergara offshore wind farm, located in the central North Sea off the northeast coast of the UK, has reached a significant milestone. Over half of the total 100 wind turbines are now in place, with the project on track for commissioning in 2026.

Van Oord, a Dutch company, completed the installation of monopile foundations and array cables in September 2025, using its new vessel Calypso. Meanwhile, Cadeler's vessel Wind Peak has been instrumental in installing the project's SG 14-222 DD wind turbines. By 25 September, Wind Peak had successfully installed 51 turbines, managing six installations per trip.

The Sofia Vergara project is notable for its innovative approach to sustainability. Half of the turbine blades to be installed are recyclable, demonstrating a commitment to reducing waste in the offshore wind industry. Each turbine stands over 252 metres tall, with blades measuring 108 metres that can sweep an area of 39,000 square metres, making them one of the largest turbines in operation.

With more than half of the turbines now installed, the 1.4 GW Sofia Vergara offshore wind farm is progressing steadily towards its 2026 commissioning date. This significant milestone underscores the project's potential to contribute to the UK's renewable energy targets and demonstrates the growing capability of the offshore wind industry.
