Social Security now enables MB Way transactions for benefit payments
Social Security Simplifies Payment Process with MB Way
In a bid to make compliance easier for citizens and businesses, the Portuguese government has introduced the MB Way payment method on the Social Security portal and mobile application, starting July 29, 2025. This move, part of the modernization of public services, is expected to significantly reduce in-person payments and offer a more convenient way for domestic workers to pay their social security contributions [1].
Last year, over 700,000 people visited a Social Security counter to pay their contributions, a figure that the new MB Way payment option aims to decrease by approximately 70% [1]. The digitalization program, known as "People First," has already enabled 450,000 people to withdraw from in-person services since January, and with the introduction of MB Way, this number is expected to increase further [1].
MB Way is a widely used digital payment app in Portugal, linked to bank cards. Users activate it by linking their bank card to the app and their mobile phone number, allowing immediate money transfers, QR code payments, and managing subscriptions, all secure and fast [2].
The Minister of Labor, Solidarity, and Social Security, Rosário Palma Ramalho, emphasized that the new MB WAY payment option is another step to facilitate the relationship with Social Security. Luís Farrajota, president of the Social Security Information Technology Institute, stated that these measures bring the State closer to the people [1].
The implementation of the measures to simplify the relationship with Social Security and focus on digital services is also expected to reduce waiting times for in-person appointments. Approximately 500,000 people are expected to be affected by this reduction in in-person payments [1].
Starting Thursday, payment via MB Way will be available for domestic workers on the Social Security portal, offering them a more convenient and streamlined payment experience. This reduction in physical visits and the immediate payment confirmations will support timely compliance and reduce administrative burden [1][2].
Payments made at cash desks by domestic workers represented 30% of payments in 2024 and remain the same in 2025. With the introduction of MB Way, this percentage is expected to decrease significantly, reflecting the convenience and efficiency of the new payment method [1].
This year, over 200,000 visits have already been recorded, showing a positive response from users to the new digital services offered by Social Security. The Minister reiterated that the digital transformation program is saving time for individuals and businesses, and the new MB Way payment option is another step in this direction [1].
