Silverstone's New £20m Museum Opens Doors to Motor Sport History

The Silverstone Experience, a £20m interactive motor sporting museum, has opened its doors at the iconic Silverstone track. The attraction features over 20 hands-on activities and is supported by HRH Prince Harry, motor sport legends like Sir Jackie Stewart and Ross Brawn, and stars from the racing world.

The 4000m2 building restoration and design were led by Jane Lock-Smith of Cube Design, with exhibition design by Mather & Co. Visitors can enjoy a 2.5-hour journey celebrating the past, present, and future of Silverstone through interactive displays and iconic film and imagery.

The attraction boasts over 20 hands-on activities, including climbing into a replica 1940s grand prix car and learning to pilot a Wellington Bomber. On display are historic cars and bikes, such as Barry Sheene's 1979 Suzuki and Nigel Mansell's 1992 British Grand Prix-winning Williams. Unseen items from the BRDC archives, like a 1992 grand prix signing-on sheet featuring Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, are also on show.

The Silverstone Experience is the result of a seven-year project, led by CEO Sally Reynolds of Silverstone Heritage Ltd, with the main construction handled by McLaren Construction. The charity behind the initiative received a £9.1m grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to inspire the next generation of engineers. The attraction is expected to draw visitors eager to explore the rich history and future of motor sport at Silverstone.
