Seychelles Bank Hit by Cyberattack: Personal Data Exposed
The Seychelles Commercial Bank (SCB) has experienced a cybersecurity incident, leading to the temporary suspension of its internet banking services. The Central Bank of Seychelles has been formally notified of the incident, which involved the exposure of personal data of internet banking customers, although no funds were accessed.
The stolen data includes customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, account types, and balances. Some of the affected accounts are labeled 'current accounts - government'. The bank has contained the incident and is working to restore its services. This incident comes at a time when the Seychelles ranks 45th on the Corporate Tax Haven Index, raising concerns about the security of financial institutions in the country. While there is no definitive information on the responsible party, known hacker collectives like REvil, Conti, and BlackCat/ALPHV have been known to carry out such attacks. Customers are advised to contact the bank directly, monitor their accounts, and be vigilant against phishing attempts.
The SCB incident serves as a reminder of the increasing threat of cyberattacks on banks worldwide. As of now, there is no concrete evidence to identify the culprit behind the SCB attack. Customers and authorities alike should stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect their data and finances.
