Security specialist Richard Fontaine named as appointee to Anthropic's long-term welfare fund
In a significant move to navigate the complexities of AI and its impact on global security, Anthropic, a Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to ensuring a safe transition through transformative AI, has appointed Richard Fontaine as a new member of its Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT).
The LTBT, an independent body designed to help Anthropic achieve its public benefit mission, serves as a valuable mechanism for Anthropic's leadership. The Trust selects new members, in consultation with Anthropic, and these members have no financial stake in the company.
Richard Fontaine brings extensive government experience to the LTBT, having worked on national security in the United States throughout his career. He has served roles at the National Security Council, the State Department, on Capitol Hill, and on the Defense Policy Board. His appointment reflects Anthropic's commitment to supporting democracy and global stability as a core pillar of its mission.
Fontaine's expertise in foreign policy and national security adds critical perspective to the LTBT. At a time when advanced AI systems increasingly impact national security, his experience is considered indispensable. Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-founder of Anthropic, believes that Fontaine's appointment strengthens the Trust's ability to guide Anthropic through complex decisions.
Amodei, along with other members of the LTBT, has emphasised the growing intersection between AI capabilities and geopolitical risks. They believe that ensuring democratic nations maintain leadership in responsible AI development is essential for both global security and the common good.
The LTBT recognises that transformative AI will reshape more than just technology or business, affecting fundamental aspects of human society. Buddy Shah, Chair of the LTBT, believes that Fontaine's extensive national security experience will bring a critical perspective to help Anthropic navigate these complex challenges.
Fontaine is pleased to lend his expertise to the important work of ensuring a safe transition through transformative AI. He considers the profound implications for everything we care about, including our security, jobs, and human interactions, to be crucial when dealing with transformative AI.
The LTBT helps Anthropic achieve its public benefit mission by selecting members of Anthropic's Board of Directors and advising the Board and leadership. This appointment underscores Anthropic's dedication to ensuring that AI is developed and deployed in a manner that benefits humanity as a whole.
