Reduced Heating Expenses with Heat Pumps: More Affordable Than Traditional Gas Heating
In a recent analysis published by the Funke media group, energy expert Thorsten Storck from Verivox highlights the financial advantages of efficient heat pumps over gas heaters. The study, which includes data up to at least 2025, was conducted by Fraunhofer ISE.
The analysis reveals that even less efficient heat pumps (annual performance factor of 2.7) offer savings, with annual heating costs being 284 euros lower than those of a gas heater. For a single-family house with an annual consumption of 20,000 kWh, the annual heating costs for a gas heater are approximately 2,262 euros. In contrast, an efficient heat pump (annual performance factor of 4) can reduce these costs to approximately 1,337 euros, resulting in a cost savings of 925 euros or 41% per year.
Thorsten Storck emphasizes that the key to cost savings with heat pumps is the efficiency of the system. Higher annual performance factors result in lower electricity requirements and greater savings compared to fossil heating systems. However, inadequate insulation of the house or less suitable heating bodies can lower the efficiency of heat pumps.
According to the analysis, the cost difference between gas heaters and heat pumps is expected to widen in the coming years due to the rising CO2 price. Operating costs are usually lower for heat pumps, as stated by Thorsten Storck. In addition, households with a heat pump benefit from lower network fees and concession charges compared to those with gas heaters.
Thorsten Storck recommends thorough advice before purchasing a new heating system, as the best heating solution depends strongly on the structural conditions. On-site advice can support and inform about various state and local funding programs. The Verivox analysis also highlights the importance of individual circumstances in heating replacement.
The Funke media group's analysis by Verivox emphasizes the financial advantages of efficient heat pumps over gas heaters. Even less powerful heat pumps still offer savings potential, making them a worthwhile investment for many households. The analysis was published in the Sunday newspapers of the Funke media group.
