Reality Recreated Film
In the ever-evolving landscape of the creative industries, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly significant. Christina Philippova, a renowned creative producer and AI creator, predicts a dramatic shift in the balance between original, innovative creativity and mass-consumption-oriented content due to the spread of AI.
This transformation is already apparent in the world of documentary filmmaking. The "Docker" Festival, a prestigious documentary film festival, is a prime example. Consisting of two competitive programs - feature and short meter, the festival has international juries and audiences awarding prizes in seven categories. The festival upholds the principle that cinema is more important than the document, a philosophy reminiscent of festivals like IDFA, Encounters, DOK Leipzig, and Cinema du Réel.
One of the most intriguing developments in documentary film production is the use of synthesized voices. In the absence of recordings, historical figures are given voices through AI technology. This innovation was showcased in the Netflix series "The Andy Warhol Diaries," where producer Ryan Murphy used AI to recreate Warhol's voice for narration. A similar approach was taken in "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022), where a synthesized voice was used for the character of Ice Man, with a portion of the budget allocated for this purpose.
AI is also making strides in assisting documentary filmmakers in their creative process. Documentary filmmakers are willing to trust AI with rough editing, and anticipate that AI will help them locate specific interview fragments in archives. However, the use of AI in scriptwriting is still subject to certain restrictions. The 2023 Hollywood strike resulted in substantial restrictions on AI use in scriptwriting and the requirement for actors' consent and compensation for using their likeness and voices.
In Russia, the use of AI in the creative industries is more prevalent. Screenwriters who use AI to write scripts are more in demand than those who rely solely on their intellectual abilities. Despite this, Dmitri Stepanov, Technical Director of IT company "LANIT-TERCOM," believes that AI cannot replace humans in any profession. Karina Avdali, founder and head of legal company SHATTERS, echoes this sentiment, having not encountered AI replacing humans in practice yet.
Composer Vasily Filatov claims that most people already encounter content created by AI. In music, AI algorithms can generate an infinite melody in real-time for users. However, the creative process remains a collaboration between humans and AI, with AI assisting in developing plot and characters, and adding detail to the world they inhabit.
As AI continues to evolve, it is clear that it will play a significant role in shaping the future of the creative industries. The next step in documentary film production is reality reconstruction using AI from photographs, a development that promises to revolutionise the way documentaries are made. The balance between human creativity and AI-generated content will continue to be a topic of interest and debate, as the creative industries navigate this exciting new era.
