Range of music selections: an average of six personal playlists on digital audio streaming platforms, spanning from relaxing tunes to dance tracks

In a recent survey conducted among 1,156 individuals in Germany, aged 16 and above, insights into the world of audio streaming playlists have been unveiled. The survey, which included 748 users of audio streaming services, has shed light on various aspects of playlist creation, sharing, and consumption.

According to the findings, an impressive 74% of users create their own playlists, with the majority (46%) sharing these playlists with family, friends, or acquaintances. Interestingly, this behaviour is particularly common among those aged 16 to 29, with 30% engaging in this practice.

The age group of 65 to 74 years, however, shows a different trend, with only 28% agreeing that they share their playlists. This could be indicative of a generational gap in sharing habits within the audio streaming community.

The survey also revealed that on average, users have 6 of their own playlists each, with 19% of users having created 10 or more playlists, and 28% having created 3 to 5. On the other hand, 21% of users only create 1 or 2 playlists.

When it comes to listening to playlists, only 23% of audio streaming users often listen to playlists they didn't create themselves. This suggests a preference for personalised playlists among the majority of users.

The vast selection of pre-made playlists available makes it easier for users to find the perfect soundtrack for every specific situation in a short amount of time. This convenience is a significant factor in the popularity of audio streaming services.

However, not everyone is entirely satisfied with the music and playlist recommendations provided by their streaming service. Only 45% of users think that the recommendations match their taste well. This dissatisfaction is particularly pronounced among the older age group of 65 to 74, with only 28% agreeing with the statement.

Sebastian Klöß, an expert for consumer technology at Bitkom, commented on the findings, stating that algorithms learn with every song. The more music you listen to, the more accurate the recommendations will be. He also emphasised that 43% of audio streaming users frequently discover new music through personalized playlists or song recommendations.

In conclusion, the survey provides a fascinating insight into the habits and preferences of audio streaming users in Germany. While there are some areas of dissatisfaction, the convenience and personalisation offered by playlists remain key factors in the popularity of audio streaming services.
