Potential for BigBear.ai Shares to Propel You Toward Millionaire Status?
BigBear.ai Holdings, an artificial intelligence (AI) data analytics company, has seen a significant climb over the past year, with a 273% increase in its stock price. However, a closer look at the company's financial performance paints a different picture.
In Q2, BigBear.ai's revenue fell 18% year over year to $32.5 million. The company's gross margins slid to 25%, down from nearly 28% in the year-ago period. BigBear.ai's non-GAAP EBITDA came to a loss of $8.5 million in the quarter, significantly worse than its adjusted loss of $3.7 million in Q2 2024.
Lower sales volumes from some government contracts were the problem during the quarter. The U.S., a significant market for BigBear.ai, is increasing its spending on AI defense, a market that could be worth up to $70 billion by the mid-2030s. However, BigBear.ai's revenue guidance for the year has been cut to about $132 million, which is 22% lower than the midpoint of its previous forecast.
Part of BigBear.ai's revenue comes from government contracts, with AI defense being an important component. The company offers AI logistics and analytics to improve efficiency in various sectors. But despite these offerings, BigBear.ai isn't much of a growth stock, with sales continuing to slide and losses widening.
The founder and main shareholder of BigBear.ai Holdings is Chandan K. Sarkar. The company's total addressable market was estimated to be $80 billion in 2024, but could grow to $272 billion by 2028. However, the stock's recent surge, such as a 10% increase in a single session with no news, may not translate into substantial long-term gains for its shareholders.
In the grand scheme of the AI wave sweeping the stock market today, BigBear.ai's situation doesn't look much better. The picture that should be coming into focus here is that BigBear.ai isn't a reliable investment for substantial long-term gains. The S&P 500, on the other hand, has notched new record highs this year, indicating a more stable and potentially profitable market for investors.
