Mister Spex, a leading optician in Germany, has expanded its subscription-based rental model for prescription and sunglasses, "Mister Spex Switch," online. This move is a response to the strong growth and high demand in store business for the service.

Since its launch online in August 2025, Mister Spex Switch has gained over 3,000 subscriptions. The service allows customers to select 2-3 pairs of glasses from a wide range of about 100 brands and 12,000 products, with a monthly fee starting from 9 euros. This comprehensive service package includes insurance coverage, free lens adjustment in case of changed vision, and an annual free eye health check-up.

The subscription model enables customers to exchange one pair of glasses for a new design after 12 months, adapting to changing personal style and vision needs. If the subscriber’s prescription changes by at least 0.5 diopters, they receive free lens replacement. The model includes comprehensive care with unlimited free basic eye exams and adjustments, minimizing unexpected costs and promoting preventive vision health.

Customers have access to the entire Mister Spex range, with sunglasses with prescription accounting for around 30 percent of all glazed glasses within Switch subscriptions. Progressive lenses account for around one-third. The average order value with Mister Spex Switch is approximately three times higher than with regular store purchases, as customers opt for premium products more frequently within the framework of the service.

Mister Spex sets new standards in the optics industry with advanced technologies such as digital 2D-to-3D tools for frame fitting and intelligent browsing functionalities. The company employs over 120 highly qualified opticians who ensure top-notch optical service in its stores.

Over 40 percent of "Mister Spex Switch" subscriptions are concluded by first-time buyers. Customers can choose the subscription option directly in the checkout process of the online shop at www.misterspex.de.

The strong performance of Mister Spex Switch in stores, such as accounting for around 10 percent of the total store turnover in June and July alone, significantly supported the decision for the online rollout. This move is a strategic effort to create recurring revenue streams, enhance customer retention, and position Mister Spex as a full-service optical care provider. This subscription approach aligns with broader industry trends toward sustainable, access-based business models in eyewear, improving profitability and customer experience.
