OpenAI to Set Up First Indian Office in New Delhi, Launching Major Data Centre Project
OpenAI is set to establish its first Indian office in New Delhi later this year, marking a significant step in the company's global expansion. The move comes as computer software and hardware industries rank second in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India, between April 2024 and March 2025.
The establishment of an OpenAI data centre in India is seen as a welcome development, especially amidst high trade tensions with the US. The project, part of the Stargate initiative, aims to build a 1GW-capacity data centre. OpenAI is currently seeking local partners, including data centre operators such as Sify Technologies and Reliance Industries, to collaborate on this venture.
The Stargate venture, involving OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and others, plans to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the US and overseas. This includes a substantial investment in India, where OpenAI has the second-largest user base, with the largest number of students using ChatGPT. The data centre project is a major advancement towards building AI infrastructure in the country.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to announce the data centre project during an upcoming trip to India. The project, part of the Stargate initiative, is a significant development for India's tech industry and a testament to the country's growing importance in the global AI landscape.
