Carpe Data, a US-based provider of data solutions for the insurance industry, has recently released its 2025 Online Fraud Insights report. The comprehensive study analyses the top locations, demographics, and tactics for insurance claims fraud in the United States.

According to the report, disability claims show the highest incidence of insurance fraud, with 8.9% of claims found to have misrepresented their claims. This is followed by workers’ compensation claims at 6.9% and auto claims at 5.7%. The report notes that these lines of business exhibit different fraud patterns. For instance, disability and workers’ compensation fraud often involve claimants hiding associations with businesses, accounting for 54% and 59% of flagged content respectively. In contrast, auto claims fraud is linked more to contradictory travel and physical activity patterns.

The report also highlights behavioural trends in fraudulent claims. A significant portion of fraud appears early, with 35% of all fraud referrals occurring in the first two months of a claim. Furthermore, persistent fraud can be seen even up to two years later as claimants’ life circumstances change.

The report underlines the importance of continuous, AI-driven fraud detection across multiple online sources. Carpe Data's innovative use of alternative and emerging data provides insurers with an advantage in fighting fraud. The company's AI-powered Online Injury Alerts & Investigative Reports help carriers spot fraud faster, reduce attorney-driven inflation, and automate key aspects of the claims cycle.

In addition, the report found that online channels such as social media, local news, and public records are common ways insurers uncover contradictory evidence. The report also points out that injury fraud thrives in areas with strong legal networks, high population density, heavy tourism, economic hardship, and legal loopholes.

Notably, the report does not specify detailed age or gender breakdowns, but it notes that younger claimants, between 18-24, are more likely to fraudulently claim injury.

Zurich is one of the insurers now working with Carpe Data to improve claims processing efficiency and fight fraud. Carpe Data has also partnered with Duck Creek Technologies to integrate its ClaimsX and Minerva products into Duck Creek's claims and underwriting platforms. The partnership aims to provide Duck Creek with improved fraud detection capabilities.

Tom Rasmussen, VP of Claims Product at Carpe Data, explains that many individuals committing fraud don't see themselves as criminals and are often led to believe they're simply maximizing their claims. He adds that many are coached by professional injury attorneys exploiting legal loopholes.

The 2025 Online Fraud Insights report is a valuable resource for understanding the trends in insurance claims fraud and for insurers looking to strengthen their fraud detection strategies.
