Norway Dominates EV Market in June with a 96.9% Market Share
Norway witnessed a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales in the first half of 2025, with the EV market share reaching an impressive 96.9%. According to the Norwegian car registration data, a total of 18,376 new cars were registered in June 2025, and an astounding 17,799 of these were electric vehicles.
The Tesla Model Y continued its reign as the most popular electric vehicle in Norway, with 5,004 new registrations in June alone. The Model Y also remained far ahead of its competitors in year-to-date figures, maintaining its leading position. The Toyota bZ4X and VW ID.4 took second and third place in June 2025 with 825 and 714 units respectively.
The Tesla Model 3, BYD Sealion 7, VW ID.3, Skoda Enyaq, Volvo EX30, VW ID.7, and Volvo EX40 were among the other popular electric vehicles in Norway during this period. Many new car models and brands entered the Norwegian market, posing fierce competition for dealers and importers.
Interestingly, the Nissan Ariya, which ranked sixth in EV registrations in June 2025, had a weaker month and dropped to eleventh place in the first half of the year. On the other hand, the growth in the Norwegian car market was particularly significant for electric cars, with half-year figures showing a 3,790 unit increase in EV sales compared to the same period in 2024.
The recovery in the Norwegian car market can be attributed to several campaigns with low interest rates on new car purchases and the first interest rate cut by Norges Bank, as stated by Øyvind Solberg Thorse, Director of OFV.
In contrast, the number of plug-in hybrids registered in June 2025 saw a significant drop, with only 152 units registered, an 83.7% decline compared to June 2024. The total number of new cars sold in the first half of 2025 was 75,515, representing a 23% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
In May 2025, Norway recorded 4,415 new electric car registrations. The growth in EV sales is a testament to Norway's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation. With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles and the continuous entry of new models, the Norwegian car market is set for an exciting future.
