Nissan Unveils Enhanced Leaf Model, Boasting Extended Driving Range, a Novel Charging Method, and Vehicle-to-Load Capability
The automotive industry is abuzz with excitement as Nissan announces the third generation of its iconic Leaf, first launched in 2010 as one of the first "mass market" electric vehicles. Set to hit dealerships in fall 2025, the new Leaf promises a significant evolution, offering SUV-like styling, longer range, improved handling, advanced battery and charging technology, and a more spacious and comfortable interior.
The 2026 Leaf is equipped with a 75-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, providing an estimated up to 303 miles of driving range on a single charge. For those seeking even more range, a bigger 75 kWh battery pack, paired with the new motor, will deliver up to 604 km of range. The Leaf's top-tier models are expected to offer a range of up to 600 km.
Under the hood, the Leaf features a new integrated 3-in-1 electric powertrain that is 10% smaller than before. The motor produces 214 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque, offering increased power and torque compared to the outgoing generation.
The Leaf also boasts impressive charging capabilities, supporting DC fast charging at up to 150 kW. This allows recharge from 10% to 80% in about 35 minutes. For AC charging, the Leaf comes equipped with a J1772 port, compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS), enhancing charging flexibility.
The 2026 Leaf adopts an SUV-like subcompact crossover body style with sleek, aerodynamic lines, boasting a drag coefficient of just 0.26, making it the most aerodynamic Nissan ever. It also includes a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic technology.
Built on the CMF-EV platform shared with the Nissan Ariya, the Leaf gains a more rigid body structure with a 66% increase in lateral stiffness, and replaces the previous torsion beam rear suspension with a new independent multi-link rear suspension for significantly improved handling.
Inside, the Leaf offers design optimizations like moving the air conditioning unit into the engine bay to create more cabin space, a flat floor for extra front passenger room, and enhanced thermal management systems that capture heat from the onboard charger to warm the battery and maintain energy efficiency.
The Leaf will feature dual screens, one behind the steering wheel and the other as the main infotainment unit, powered by Android Automotive. It will also offer route planning, a feature that has been standard in Tesla, Polestar, and Volvo vehicles for years.
Additional features include vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home compatibility in Japan, and for European markets, the Leaf will be Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) compatible, allowing it to send stored energy back to the power grid in the future.
With over 700,000 Leafs sold since its launch in 2010, the new model is expected to significantly grow that number in the coming years. Local pricing and specifications of the new Leaf model are likely to be announced early next year. The new Leaf's exterior design is more like an SUV with certain sedan features, making it more practical and appealing to families. A notable design element is the pop-out door handles, a design first seen in the Tesla Model S in 2012. The new Leaf also features a moonroof with a night-dimming feature.
