China's leading electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD, is poised to make a significant impact in the premium segment of the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market with the launch of its new models, the Tang L SUV and Han L sedan.
The Tang L, set to be officially unveiled on January 16, 2025, and launched on April 9, 2025, will boast a sleek design with dimensions of 5,040 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,760 mm in height. The SUV will offer a cargo volume of 675 L, expandable to 1,960 L with seats folded down.
The Tang L will feature a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen, an AR heads-up display, dual-color interior, augmented reality features, ambient lighting, bamboo wood accents, and more. Exact pricing details for the Tang L in China are yet to be announced, but given its premium positioning, it is expected to be priced accordingly.
The Han L, while details are scarce, is expected to share some interior design elements with the Tang L, such as a dual-color theme and advanced infotainment systems.
BYD's other product lineup is the Ocean lineup, primarily named after marine life and ships. The company is expected to intensify competition in China's NEV market starting from 2025 with a teaser of these two new models.
In December 2024, BYD sold a staggering 514,809 NEVs, bringing full-year sales to a record-breaking 4,272,145 units. The Han family, which offers mid-to-large-size sedans, sold 34,071 units in December, bringing full-year sales to 258,452 units. The Tang family, offering mid-to-large-size SUVs, sold 16,255 units in December, bringing full-year sales to 153,365 units.
Both the Tang and Han families are currently available in hybrid DM-i and DM-p variants, as well as pure electric EV variants. The 2025 Tang DM-i has a starting price of RMB 179,800 ($24,630), while the 2025 Han DM-i has a starting price of RMB 165,800.
As BYD expands its promotion to cover Song Pro DM-i and Qin Plus EV models, it is clear that the company is committed to maintaining its dominance in the NEV market.
