New App BestB4 Fights Global Food Waste with AI-Powered Fridge
A new app, BestB4, is tackling a global issue: food waste. With an average person worldwide wasting 79 kilograms of food annually, equivalent to around one billion meals thrown away daily, BestB4 aims to make a difference.
The app, built with artificial intelligence, maintains a 'virtual fridge' that sends notifications when a product's expiration date is approaching. It suggests recipes to help users use up products before they expire, reducing waste and saving money.
BestB4 currently offers a few recipes in collaboration with the Instagram account @tastyfood_lv and plans to expand its recipe database. Users can create a free account, track product expiration dates, and receive reminders. The app is continuously being improved, with the team behind it aiming to make it a comprehensive tool for managing food waste.
BestB4 is addressing a significant global problem, with food waste amounting to 1.05 billion tonnes annually, 60% of which comes from households. By helping users monitor product expiry dates more effectively, BestB4 seeks to reduce food waste and financial loss. The Future Heroes leadership and entrepreneurship programme for girls aged 14 to 17 has accepted ten teams in 2024, with each team developing its own project, including potentially innovative solutions like BestB4.
