Nedstack and ZBT joining forces for Fuel Cell Collaborative Development and Industrialization Project

In a significant step towards a more sustainable future, Nedstack and ZBT have announced a partnership to co-develop and industrialize hydrogen fuel cell technology. This collaboration was unveiled during the Arnhem-Duisburg partner city dialogue on February 3, 2023.

The partnership aims to enable the transition to decarbonized power generation applications such as ship propulsion, flex load power generation, and temporary power systems. Both companies have contributed to the development of fuel cell maturity for over 20 years, and this new alliance is expected to bring opportunities for companies in both Duisburg and Arnhem.

Duisburg, home to the University of Duisburg Essen, the Ship Technology Center DST, and an ecosystem of advanced chemical companies, has shown a mutual interest in energy innovation and hydrogen technologies. Arnhem, the energy capital of the Netherlands, hosting TENNET, the Dutch TSO, shares similar aspirations. Both cities have a commitment to achieving NetZero.

Nedstack and ZBT have supported each other in various projects, with ZBT backing the Nedstack technology roadmap definition and previous fuel cell design projects. The name of the project between Nedstack and ZBT related to the further development and industrialization of fuel cells is referred to as a 'development cooperation' (Entwicklungskooperation). This cooperation is considered a lighthouse example of fruitful cooperation.

The mayors of Arnhem and Duisburg were present at the closing of this partnership. Nermina Kundić, Alderwoman of City of Arnhem, emphasized the importance of cooperation and innovation in the journey towards a more sustainable society. She stated that this journey does not stop at borders. The mayors of both cities have jointly undersigned a letter of intent to continue the process of symbiotic development in a cross-border partnership.

Over the last decade, Arnhem and Duisburg have become more cohesive and engaged in multiple dialogues towards integrating their cross-border eco-system. The Economic Board has been co-hosting the Arnhem-Duisburg dialogue. This partnership between Nedstack and ZBT is a testament to the ongoing collaboration between these two cities.

As part of this partnership, Nedstack is upscaling its advanced fuel cell manufacturing capabilities up to a 1-Gigawatt stack rated power capacity towards 2027. This development is expected to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of power generation applications and the transition towards a more sustainable future.
