In the realm of technology, few areas have witnessed as dramatic a transformation as mobile computing. Over the past five decades, mobile devices have evolved from bulky, basic telephones to sleek, multifunctional devices that are an integral part of our daily lives.

The journey began in the 1970s, during the early portability phase. Pioneering innovations such as the "call handoff" system for cellular mobile communication, developed by Amos E. Joel, Jr., laid the foundation for mobile telephony [1]. In 1973, Motorola's Martin Cooper made the first handheld mobile phone call, marking a significant milestone towards mobile portability [1].

The 1980s and 1990s saw the development of digital cellular networks. Advances in cellular infrastructures allowed for more compact mobile phones with enhanced features and better connectivity [2]. Simultaneously, parallel advancements in microprocessors and integrated circuits made mobile computing devices smaller and capable of more complex tasks [2].

The late 1990s and early 2000s marked the emergence of mobile data and internet connectivity. The integration of packet-switched data over mobile networks enabled basic Internet access on mobile devices. Technologies such as ARPANET laid the groundwork for Internet connectivity, evolving into TCP/IP standards and eventually widespread Web access by mid-1990s [3]. This period also saw the evolution of cloud computing concepts, improving the ability to access remote data and services from mobile devices [4].

The launch of smartphones, led by Apple iPhone, in 2007, popularised mobile computing as a platform for complex applications and multimedia [4]. Mobile ecosystems developed around app stores, cloud services, and social media, creating interconnected digital environments.

Currently, we are in the digital ecosystems and pervasive connectivity phase. Mobile computing now involves seamless connectivity through 4G/5G networks, integration with cloud computing, IoT devices, and AI. Devices function as nodes in vast digital ecosystems where connectivity, services, data, and applications operate fluidly across platforms and devices [4].

Divergence in mobile computing refers to the preference for single, best-of-breed devices that offer premium functionality and portability. On the other hand, convergence aims to enable multiple functions from a single device, with the smartphone being a prime example. The merge of fixed and mobile computing is a future goal, marking the pinnacle of mobile computing.

The phrase "the internet of things" refers to the next phase of mobile computing, focusing on creating interactive ecosystems for devices. As we move forward, we can expect mobile computing to continue evolving, offering even more seamless and integrated experiences.
