Taiwan Receives Altius-600M Attack Drones: A Game-Changer for Asymmetric Defense
Taiwan's military has taken a significant step forward in its defense strategy against potential threats from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with the delivery of Altius-600M attack drones. These loitering munitions, manufactured by Anduril Industries, are set to enhance Taiwan's precision strike and surveillance capabilities in contested airspace.
The Altius-600M, with a length of about 2.5 meters and a wingspan of roughly 3 meters, offers a moderate payload of approximately 23 kg. It can loiter in the target area for extended periods, increasing target acquisition intelligence before executing precise strikes. With a flight endurance of around 6 hours, a max speed near 190 km/h, and a 37 hp Wankel engine, this drone is a valuable asset for Taiwan’s asymmetric defense approach.
One of the key features of the Altius-600M is its autonomy and guidance. It likely features automated terminal attack capabilities and remote guidance, allowing it to be deployed against dynamic or time-sensitive targets. Minister Koo did not specify any new drone models or technologies being procured, but he did emphasize the importance of discarding traditional ways of thinking about warfare. The Defense Innovation Office, established in February last year, assesses applications for new technologies and products to bolster the military's combat capabilities. These new technologies and products, including the Altius-600M, are then included in the military's plans to bolster combat capabilities.
The significance of the Taiwan-US partnership in countering threats from the CCP is underscored by this drone delivery. Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril Industries, met with Minister Wellington Koo to discuss future military procurements. The military is continuing to procure reconnaissance and attack drones to meet its defense needs, aiming to improve situational awareness and rapid response.
The Altius-600M can travel 440km, scout battle zones, relay communications, and counteract electronic warfare. It can fire from multiple types of vehicles and hover in the air for up to four hours. Additionally, it can be equipped with high-explosive anti-tank missiles, making it indispensable for asymmetric battle.
The reusable and recyclable nature of the Altius-600M further emphasizes its strategic value.
