Meta Boosts Instagram Age Verification Using AI

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is beefing up its efforts to safeguard young users on its platforms. This comes amidst rising worries from parents and lawmakers, as well as criticism from competitors like Google.

Meta is bolstering its age verification processes on Instagram using AI. This new tool will actively seek out accounts with false birthdates and automatically switch them to more protective teen settings.

Last year, the EU launched an investigation into Meta's youth protection measures. Meanwhile, a lawsuit was filed in the US after pedophiles were found to be targeting children on Instagram. These incidents have put pressure on Meta to enhance its safety measures.

Google has been critical of Meta's approach, arguing that self-regulation by platforms like Meta, Snap, and X lacks transparency and accountability. Google believes this could erode user trust and hinder effective content moderation. Meta, however, advocates for stronger self-regulation by platforms.

The introduction of AI-driven age verification on Instagram is a significant step by Meta to enhance the safety of young users. If successful, it could set a new standard for protecting minors online. The debate surrounding the responsibility for safeguarding children online continues among major tech companies.
