Louis Vuitton Revives Classic Monterey Watch After 33 Years
Louis Vuitton has unveiled the Monterey 2025, a modern reissue of the classic 1988 Monterey, marking the brand's return to watchmaking after over three decades. The new timepiece pays homage to its predecessor while incorporating contemporary design and high-end horology.
The Monterey 2025 is crafted at the Louis Vuitton Time Factory in Geneva. It features a 39mm 18-carat yellow gold case, sapphire glass, and an engraved case back. The dial is made of grand feu enamel, adorned with red and blue minute markers and Arabic numerals, reminiscent of classic pocket watches. The watch is powered by the automatic caliber LFTMA01.02 movement, which offers a 45-hour power reserve and boasts fine finishing.
The original Monterey was Louis Vuitton's first watch, designed by Italian architect Gae Aulenti. It was equipped with world time and alarm functions. Now, the Monterey 2025 comes with a black calf leather strap and an 18-carat yellow gold buckle.
The Monterey 2025 is limited to 188 pieces and priced at around €56,000. Its resurgence can be attributed to the influence of Tyler, the Creator, who sparked a renewed interest in the Monterey II, with auction prices soaring from a few hundred to up to 8,000 euros.
