Looming disruption in the agricultural drone market as government review of DJI models approaches, raising potential concerns for players in the industry.

The future of DJI, a leading drone manufacturer, in the US market is uncertain as a mandated security review by the US government approaches. The review, required by the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), is intended to assess the national security risks posed by Chinese-made drones, including those manufactured by DJI.

The review process, which is set to be completed by December 23, 2025, has not yet begun, raising concerns across industries that rely on DJI drones. House Republicans have recently called on the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) to accelerate the review and produce preliminary findings within 30 days.

DJI, in response, has formally urged relevant agencies to fulfill this obligation set out by Congress, while also expressing concerns about the potential for rushed and unfair processes. The company emphasizes the importance of a transparent and evidence-based review to ensure fairness and innovation in the sector.

If no agency initiates and completes the required formal security audit by the NDAA deadline, DJI drones will automatically be banned in the US by being added to the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC's) Covered List. This would prevent the import, sale, and use of DJI drones, with wide-reaching impacts on public safety agencies, agriculture, and businesses relying on DJI technology.

The growth in agricultural drone usage is significant, particularly in the Americas (North America, Central America, and South America) and Southeast Asia, according to DJI. This growth has led to increased competition, with companies like Guardian Agriculture, Hylio, SiFly, and Heinen Brothers Agra Services positioning themselves as alternatives to DJI.

Guardian Agriculture, a US-based drone maker, is developing larger, more robust drones with a large payload capacity and coverage area per hour, designed for large US farms. They plan to make this technology available to customers in Salinas, Yuma, and Coachella this year.

Heinen Brothers Agra Services, known for manned crop spraying airplanes, is pushing into the unmanned space via a new subsidiary called Kelly Hills Unmanned Systems. This move positions them as a 'Made in America' option for US farmers in an evolving trade environment.

The American Spray Drone Coalition, representing leading distributors in the agricultural spray drone market, has issued a warning should Chinese drone makers be effectively blacklisted. They express concerns about the potential impact on the industry and the need for a balanced approach to ensure continued innovation and growth.

As the review process unfolds, the future of DJI in the US market remains uncertain. The company, along with other stakeholders, is closely watching the developments, hoping for a fair and transparent review that upholds the principles of innovation and competition.
