Local governments utilize water meters to spot damaged pipelines
In a unanimous decision, the municipal councils of Allmendingen and Altheim have awarded a contract worth 236,000 euros to Netze BW for the conversion of over 2000 water meters and the setup of a radio network. This initiative aims to modernize the water infrastructure, improve efficiency, and reduce costs for citizens.
The digital water meters are expected to significantly reduce effort for citizens as they will no longer need to report meter readings manually. These smart meters will transmit readings automatically, eliminating the need for manual recording. Furthermore, the digital system will enable early detection of leaks in the pipe system, helping to identify issues such as dripping faucets and water pipe breaks.
One of the key benefits of this digital system is the potential for cost savings. By extending calibration cycles up to twelve years, the municipalities may incur reduced operational costs. However, the exact costs for installation and maintenance in Allmendingen and Altheim are not currently available. The costs for digital water meter installation and maintenance can vary widely depending on factors such as meter type, system size, existing infrastructure, and regional labor costs.
The radio network is essential for transmitting the digital water meter readings, as the existing network is insufficient, according to the mayor. The municipal councils aim to perform this replacement jointly and uniformly within their administrative community.
Citizens can also benefit from the early detection of leaks, as they will be contacted when a message is sent, allowing them to search for problems at home promptly. This feature will help prevent water waste and potential property damage.
The decision to proceed with the conversion and radio network setup follows a competitive bidding process, with Netze BW submitting the most favorable bid. This modernization project is set to bring numerous benefits to the residents of Allmendingen and Altheim, including increased efficiency, cost savings, and enhanced leak detection capabilities.
