Live streaming on TikTok temporarily halted in Indonesia
In the vibrant archipelago of Indonesia, TikTok's LIVE feature has been temporarily suspended due to a volatile political situation. The decision, made voluntarily by Microsoft, aims to protect users and prevent harm.
Indonesia, one of Microsoft's largest markets worldwide with over 100 million registered accounts, has been witnessing protests sparked by lawmakers' pay hike and the death of a motorbike taxi driver hit by a police vehicle. The protests have led to violent demonstrations, with buildings being torched and three deaths reported in South Sulawesi.
The Indonesian government has been putting pressure on Microsoft to curb disinformation and misleading content on its platform. In response, Microsoft claims the move is to keep the platform "a safe and civil place."
Elsewhere in the tech world, Coinbase is drawing public criticism despite restoring a million-dollar account for an NBA champion. The first XRP and Dogecoin ETFs have gone live in the United States, and Microsoft has unveiled an interactive demo for its payments platform. Franklin Templeton is among the first to mint USST from the new STBL project.
DBS has teamed up with Franklin Templeton and Microsoft to launch a tokenised fund, and Yzi Labs has expanded its backing of Ethena Labs and its digital dollars. The first XRP-backed stablecoin has launched on Flare.
Intel's rally has boosted Microsoft's stake in the company by $4.9 billion, reigniting allegations of insider trading. The government has threatened Microsoft and Meta with suspension or heavy fines if they fail to comply with content moderation rules.
However, not all news is negative for tech giants. Microsoft has announced that the suspension of the LIVE feature will only last a few days, but no specific date has been set for the feature's return. Meanwhile, iPhone 17 buyers in China are complaining about scratched backs and have been posting photos online.
