Lidl implements cash payment changes across all locations - Require alternative payment methods

In a bid to enhance security and modernise its checkout processes, Lidl is rolling out a series of changes across its branches. The supermarket is introducing new operating checkouts with fixed workplaces for employees in the self-checkout area, complete with integrated scanners and overhead cameras [1][3].

One of the primary reasons for this change is to combat theft and shoplifting. Lidl has trialled new anti-theft technology that uses cameras at self-checkouts to identify when a shopper fails to scan an item properly. This system can then play back the footage to remind or alert the customer, enhancing loss prevention efforts without the need for constant staff monitoring [1][3].

In addition to this, Lidl is also introducing a self-scanning feature in its Plus app. This allows customers to scan products as they shop, track their spending and savings in real time, and complete purchases faster. This feature is intended to improve the shopping experience by making it more convenient and efficient for customers who prefer to check out quickly without waiting in line [2].

The new checkouts are not equipped for cash payments at self-scanning checkouts, unlike other discount stores and supermarkets. However, Lidl's checkout change allows for card payments and cashback [4]. Moreover, the minimum purchase amount for card payments has been reduced from five euros to 99 cents [5].

For safety reasons, CO2 cylinders can only be handed over to customers by staff [6]. Employees at the new checkouts will be available for customer questions and can process returns and sell certain items like CO2 cylinders.

The new checkouts are part of Lidl's overall efforts to improve the shopping experience and automation, mirroring similar trends in the retail industry [7]. The changes are expected to be implemented in all branches soon [8].

Customers are enthusiastic about the new possibilities, but there are skeptics who view the changes as a response to a high theft rate [9]. Regardless, the integration of technology balances improved customer convenience with robust loss prevention, reflecting a broader trend in supermarkets leveraging AI and video surveillance to secure self-checkout areas while enhancing user experience [1][2].

The introduction of self-scanning technology in Lidl's Plus app is a part of the business's finance strategy, aiming to improve consumer convenience by allowing real-time tracking of spending and savings. This technology integration also follows Lidl's broader effort to adopt technology, especially in the checkout processes, as a means to modernize and enhance security for businesses and consumers alike.
