Jeff Bezos and his brother set for historic journey aboard the inaugural flight of New Shepard spaceship

On July 20th, Blue Origin's New Shepard is set to make history with its first human space flight. The spacecraft, named after Alan Shepard, the second person and first US citizen to fly into space, will carry an astronaut crew that includes Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, and his brother, Mark Bezos.

The flight coincides with the anniversary of the Apollo 11 astronauts landing on the moon. In addition to the Bezos brothers, a space tourist will also be on board. Justin Sun, a crypto billionaire and TRON founder, won the seat in a 2021 auction with a bid of $28 million.

The New Shepard is a suborbital launch vehicle, reaching heights of 100km above the Earth's surface. During the flight, the astronauts will experience three minutes of zero gravity. Upon returning to Earth, the six-berth capsule will descend under parachutes and land vertically on the ground.

Blue Origin is auctioning off the seat, with the current highest known bid being $28 million, paid by Justin Sun. The proceeds from the auction benefit 19 space-focused charities. As of August 2025, there is no publicly available information about a higher bid for any subsequent auctions.

Mark Bezos described the invitation as a 'remarkable opportunity', and Jeff Bezos, in his usual pioneering spirit, is embarking on this space flight. The auction for the seat will conclude on June 12th.
